On November 4th, this year, Philippines’ Karen Ibasco was crowned Miss Earth 2017 and as she was being crowned, Ibasco was in tears and joy. However, it’s not just her win but also her winning answer that has turned her into a celebrity on the Internet.
For the final round of the competition, there was a Q&A segment and in the segment, the anchor asked Ibasco – ‘Who is mother Earth’s biggest enemy?’
Now, we all know the answer to this question, a little too well, to be exact. Ask anyone and you would get the answer – Climate change. Our planet is changing and it’s changing fast, much faster than what one can even comprehend. As per various research papers, if our planet keeps on environmentally changing at this speed, then in the next 15-20 years, there would be nothing and no place to call home for us.
However, this was not the answer that Ibasco gave. Without a second thought, she said, “I believe that the real problem in this world is not climate change. The real problem is us because of our ignorance and apathy. What we have to do is to start changing our ways, to start recalibrating our minds and redirecting our steps because together, as a global community, our micro-efforts will have a macro-effect to help save our home, our planet”.
Now, this is definitely the best and correct answer to the question. Climate change is happening because we’re contributing to it and at the same time, doing nothing to reverse it.
Needless to say, the crowd gave a loud round of applause and the judges couldn’t stop smiling at her brilliant understanding of the grave issue and quick answer.
