It might have risen to disrupt the entire fabric of the Sri Lankan society now in 2022, but the truth is that the crisis in Sri Lanka isn’t a brand new phenomenon.
It was back in 2019 when news about the crisis first began to circulate from the tiny but cherubic island nation, the very place where the only sounds one hears today are a far cry from a normal and happy life.
To make a sense of just what has happened in Sri Lanka given the ongoing discornerting crisis, it’s important to note that owing to a combination of several woes, such as – economic mismanagement, constantly rising economic debts, depleting foreign exchange reserves, all of which has led to a weakened currency, Sri Lanka’s best days, are behind her.
But whether better days can soon follow in some course of time is not known to one and all, what is known is that there are nations that are doing their best to save the day for the Island jewel, a country whose calm disposition is both inspiring and enlightening.
That being said, among the countries to have offered a handshake of warmth and support during Sri Lanka’s moment of distress is India, and rather unsurprisingly so.
As a matter of fact, legendary cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya has expressed deep contentment towards the kind help India, Sri Lanka’s friendly neighbour, has offered during the country’s need-of-the-hour moment.
Before we dive into what India assisted its southern neighbour with, it makes perfect sense to know about the kind of help that was offered.
In addition to New Delhi already offering financial assistance to Colombo, India has just confirmed a further $1 billion line of credit. Over the course of the last 24 hours, a consignment each of 36,000 MT of petrol and 40,000 MT of diesel has been dispatched from India.
Why of all this matters is simply down to the fact that what Sri Lanka is facing at this point in time, is its worst crisis since independence.
Having said that, the following are the kind words that iconic left handed run-making machine Sanath Jayasuriya echoed:
As a neighbour and a big brother of our country, India has always helped us. We’re grateful to the Indian government and PM Modi. For us, it is not easy to survive because of the current scenario. We hope to come out from this with the help of India & other countries.
Meanwhile, the following information was furnished on the public domain from the part of the Sri Lankan authorities:
Indian credit line for fuel at work!!! One consignment each of 36,000 MT petrol and 40,000 MT diesel was delivered to Sri Lanka in the last 24 hours. Total supply of various types of fuel under Indian assistance now stands at more than 270,000 MT.
Part of how the tourism sector has been hit drastically in the post COVID period is down to the heavy losses that it has sustained. The worst thing being that at a time where the sector, a huge contributor to the Sri Lankan economy, was beginning to get back on its feet, it has been hit yet again!
