Emperor Penguins Marching Toward Extinction Thanks To Climate Change

We talk about it a lot. We hear people talking about it, in fact, all the time. There are massive awareness campaigns being built around it. There are massive cost cuttings being made to ensure that the venomous bite of this unwanted environmental epidemic can be curtailed and kept in check. There are innumerable celebrities- singers, musicians, actors, social workers, activists- who have joined hands to raise a voice against the dominant discourse of our time and yet, we hardly find governments, organizations and their cohorts doing enough to tackle the menacing challenge that is climate change.

The next species, it turns out, that’s standing in the shooting line, embracing the unmistakably dangerous attack of climate change are the emperor penguins.

A new study apparently found out that the normal “business as usual” approach to tackle climate change won’t really help the emperor penguins, as it turns out. This serious gaffe on the part of the ignorant lot that is mankind is doomed to push the emperor penguins toward the path of extinction.

There’s no rocket science theory to this. What happens to the living civilization when a part of its ecology is eroded and ultimately, nothing is done to keep a check on it?

One simply dies out and burns away, right? The same is happening to the emperor penguins who are finding their home base- Antarctic Sea ice- that’s rapidly melting away.

As a result of this rampant ecological phenomenon, the birds that are native to the area are being pushed to the threat of extinction!

India Today, publishing a report on the growing cause of concern happened to share:

An international team of researchers, including those from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) in the US, said that the emperor penguins — the tallest and heaviest of all species of penguins — are highly dependent on the fate of sea ice, which they use as a home base for breeding and molting.

That said, just how was the study undertaken?
As part of the study, the researchers combined two existing computer models.

The first was a global climate model created by the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in the US which offered projections of where and when sea ice would form under different climate scenarios.

The time, therefore, to act is now- right now! Nature’s fury is something none can ever stand up to with sizeable defense- isn’t it?
