Xiaomi Redmi 4 Specifications and Review: This Is The New Entry-Level King

Xiaomi Redmi 4 has been launched by the Chinese smartphone maker and after all those leaks and rumors suggesting it to be a filler, it has turned out to be the best device currently available in the market. Redmi Note 4, Redmi 4A and Xiaomi Redmi 4, the numbers seem to be a lucky one for the company despite the fact that is considered bad luck in China.

Xiaomi has been on a roll since the start of this year, launching back-to-back VFM and class-leading smartphones in India in order to stay at the top when it comes to the ever so competitive mid-budget and entry level segment of smartphones. Xiaomi Redmi 4 series, on the other hand, is the perfect successor to the Redmi 3 series that had what it takes to be the segment leader for more than 9 months.

Just like its predecessor, Xiaomi Redmi 4 also features some hard-to-get specifications and has been launched in three variants. The 2GB/16GB variant is priced at Rs 6,999, 3GB/32GB variants comes for Rs 8,999 and the 4GB/64GB costs Rs 10,999 in India. Xiaomi Redmi 4 will be available via Amazon India and Mi.com from May 23, 12 PM with a pre-order option on the latter.

As we told you earlier, Xiaomi is still going to dominate the entry-level segment despite the competition from Lenovo and Motorola and here’s why!

Xiaomi Redmi 4 Specifications

  • 5-inch IPS LCD HD (720×1280 pixels) 2.5D curved glass display with 293 PPI
  • 1.4GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 SoC coupled with Adreno 505 GPU
  • 2GB/3GB/4GB of RAM and 16GB/32GB/64GB inbuilt storage options, expandable up to 128GB via microSD
  • 13MP rear camera with f/2.0 aperture, PDAF, LED flash, HDR, touch focus, geo-tagging, face/smile detection and panorama picture.
  • 5 MP front camera with f/2.2 aperture
  • Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow with MIUI on top
  • Fingerprint scanner at the back and hybrid dual SIM
  • 4100mAh battery with quick charge support
  • 4G VoLTE, GPS/ A-GPS, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth v4.1, Micro-USB with OTG, 3.5mm audio jack and an infrared sensor.
  • Other features include App Lock, Second Space (allowing multi-account profiles), Dual Apps (allowing users to operate two different WhatsApp accounts simultaneously) and a special beta preview of Android Nougat-based MIUI out-of-the-box.

What We Like About Xiaomi Redmi 4

  • With a design that utilizes metal, glass, and plastics in all the right places, it makes Xiaomi Redmi look and feel like a work of art. Plus, a metal back at this price range is rarely seen. Rather than being a Redmi 3S successor, it feels like a torn down version of the Redmi Note 4 which is always a good thing.
  • The display looks sharp and vibrant as well as offers good visibility both indoors and outdoors, making the best unit in this segment.
  • The 13MP camera is the perfect shooter but considering the price range, it is one of the best that there is. It offers crisp-looking images with perfect saturation both indoors and outdoors, however, there is a little bit of noise but you could not expect more from Xiaomi Redmi 4 here.
  • Snapdragon 435 SoC coupled with Adreno 505 GPU and 4GB RAM is the best you can get for Rs 10,999 and heavy (performance) users will not complain about what Xiaomi Redmi 4 has to offer.
  • The 4100mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 is still a benchmark

What we Miss in Xiaomi Redmi 4

  • The 5MP camera is not the best in this segment as it struggles to find the perfect colors as well as fails to reduce noise.
  • Android 7.0 Nougat is still missing.
  • While the 4GB/64GB variant offers best in class performance, the other two are not for heavy users as they can only offer satisfaction with moderate usage.

Verdict

Considering its price tag, the Xiaomi Redmi 4 offers bang for every buck you will be spending on it and it will continue to rule the segment for another 6 months or so. However, the underpowered Snapdragon 435 SoC but won’t be a problem for people coming into this segment as they are looking for an all-rounder, offering solid specifications and sturdy performance on a budget.
