LG Stylus 3: A Nice Attempt But It Could Have Been Better

LG Stylus 3 is here and after the not-well-known success of the predecessor, the company has quietly launched its next mid-budget offering. On one hand, LG G6 is all geared up to turn the tables in the premium segment, while on the other hand, LG Stylus 3 is expected to cement LG’s position in this segment.

However, it seems like, the company is focusing so much on the Samsung Galaxy S8 competitor that LG Stylus 3 is just a child born out of the wedlock. While the smartphone boasts some class leading features like a 3200 mAh battery, exceptional RAM, sturdy build, but the non-Snapdragon SoC, outdated looks and over the top prize are the reason that will hold the LG Stylus 3 back.

However, when it comes to mid-budget smartphones, LG’s does something that other manufacturers like Lenovo, Xiaomi, Motorola and even Samsung can’t. And yes, we have to give all the credit that LG Stylus 3 deserves due to a well-rounded package.

LG Stylus 3 Specification

  • 5.7-inch (1280×720) HD Display
  • 1.5GHz octa-core MediaTek MT6750 processor paired with Mali-T860MP2 GPU
  • 3GB memory and 16GB storage (expandable up to 2TB)
  • 8-megapixel front camera
  • 13-megapixel rear camera with f/2.2 lens and LED Flash
  • 3,200mAh removable battery
  • Android 7.0 Nougat
  • Measurement: 155.6 mm by 79.8 mm by 7.4 mm
  • Weight: 149 grams
  • Stylus
  • Fingerprint scanner
  • Dual-SIM card slots, 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2 and USB 2.0 and OTG support

What’s Good

  • Though the specs might not sound too exciting, “Pen Pop 2.0” stylus with a “Precision Tip” that puts the icing on the top.
  • Android 7.0 Nougat
  • Bright display and good viewing angles even in direct sunlight
  • The one thing that LG Stylus 3 is really good at is the multimedia experience including the 13MP rear camera that can record video at 1080p and 30fps. The 8MP camera at the front also offers enough details even in low lighting.

What’s Bad

  • 1.5GHz octa-core MediaTek MT6750 processor has never been better than a Snapdragon unit and LG Stylus 3 is no exception

  • At the asking price of Rs. 18,500, 16GB of internal storage is way less than the competition.
  • No Quick Charge Support
  • Considering the recent bezel-less design trend, LG Stylus 3 seems outdated.

Verdict

It’s no brainer than LG Stylus 3 has what it takes to be a nice multimedia smartphone with at-par performance capabilities but it is the price that is our main concern.

Priced at Rs 17,999, Lenovo Z2 Plus offers 3GB RAM + 32GB Storage, full HD display resolution, a smaller screen size of 5-inch. It is also powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 quad-core processor under the hood and offers 4K video recording capabilities.

Moreover, the recent introduction of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 at just Rs 12,999, that offers 4GB RAM+64GB storage, a metal unibody design, 4,100mAh battery and 2GHz octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor, is also a better buy than the LG Stylus 3.

However, if the LG Stylus 3 would have been launched with a price tag between Rs 12,000-15000, it could have been another story altogether.
