Imagine, you are driving in a car which is in auto-pilot more, and able to conduct a video conference with your folks in the office, monitor the CCTV camera in your house and order food which will be ready by the time you reach the destination. This is not a scene from a sci-fi movie, but a reality which will transform the way we travel.
Wikipedia defines, connected car as “a car that is equipped with Internet access, and usually also with a wireless local area network. This allows the car to share internet access with other devices both inside as well as outside the vehicle.”
Today, we evaluate various features that are available on board a connected car which is plying on Indian roads.
Safety and Convenience: This is the most common feature available in all the cars. So the car ensures that your location is sent to the family and friends in near real-time.
SOS: Whether sending an alert to the police about theft of the car or sending an alert to the service station about a breakdown of the vehicle. The connected car does it all. The on board super powerful computer is pre-programmed to share and store information and also enable intelligent decision making.
Auto – Health: Right from checking the fuel availability to reminding the owner about next engine service which is due. The intelligent connected car does it all. The smart computers on the car also gather and analyze the the driving details to enable real-time and accurate availability of data during the time of insurance calculation.
Driver Assist: The connected car manufacturers in the country and ensuring maximum utilization of this technology for creating the most driver friendly car. It features such as parking assist, SMS alerts if the car is left unlock, and connectivity to a smart phone are most commonly found these days.
Helping Save The Environment: One of the many advantages of a connected car is to help save the environment. Thanks to the technology on-board the vehicle, the owner can now easily track service due date, fuel consumption and health of the engine. This tracking mechanism will help reduce wear and tear of the vehicle hence reducing the pollution it might cause.
Shopping: Real-time tracking of location and driver/owner data helps the companies monetize the information broadcast by these cars. For example the driver can check the nearest available stores and offers available and make a decision to stop by and shop. Similarly, a retail mall can enable car advertising to the vehicles which are in a certain radius around its location.
In addition to all the above, the data generated by these cars can prove to a vital source of information for robotics and auto research students and organizations.
