Vijender Singh vs Zulpikar Maimaitiali, this a bout that took months in making and when the two fighters will trade punches on August 5 at the National Sports Club of India, Mumbai, it is going to be their biggest fight ever.
Being dubbed as ‘Battleground Asia’, not only Vijender Singh’s World Boxing Organisation (WBO) Asia-Pacific champion will be at state, but Maimaitiali’s WBO Oriental Super Middleweight title will also be on the line, in this winner takes all competition. Simply put, this will be a unification bout, in which the loser will hand over his belt to the winner.
“I will knock you out!”
This was not the first time that Vijender Singh heard these words coming out from an opponent in his 2-year long career and when Zulpikar Maimaitiali said those words during the media conference at the NSCI Stadium in Worli, the Indian boxing sensation just laughed at the disclaimer which indeed tells of a man backed by seven knockout wins in his eight-match career and all those opponents had pretty much same words to say before the bouts.
However, Vijender Singh vs Zulpikar Maimaitiali, is not going to be just another bout as it will decide the King Of Asia and it will be a battle between the top two boxers of the Asian Subcontinent. While Vijender Singh is going through an unbeaten streak since turning pro in 2015, winning all the eight bouts he has played, Zulpikar too stands strong with an unbeaten streak of his own having played nine bouts.
But, where the tables turn in Vijender Singh’s favor is the fact that while he has won seven of his bouts via knockout, the WBO Oriental Super Middleweight Champions has done it only six times. Moreover, the Haryana boy has the experience of 30 rounds while Chinaman has just played 27 rounds.
There is also a stark difference in their approach inside the ring and while Vijender Singh has astonished his opponents an exceptional combination of power and agility, Maimaitiali, on the other hand, is a Southpaw and waits for the most opportune moment, and only one punch at the right time can make a difference.
Vijender had last fought and beat former World Champions Tanzanian Francis Cheka who had challenged him for the WBO Asia-Pacific title and has assured his fans he will again leave the ring being the Champion in Mumbai.
Earlier, the Vijender Singh vs Zulpikar Maimaitiali bout was scheduled for 1st April but China’s WBO Oriental champion backed out without specifying any reasons. From that moment on, the whole boxing world was flooded with rumors stating that none of the fighters are ready to lose their teeth at the hands of Singh and the Olympic Bronze Medalist has sounded a heart-wrenching holler that has forced opponents to stay away from him.
However, Zulpikar Maimaitiali has finally accepted the challenge and he will enter the ring looking forward to regaining the lost grounds after he rejected the offer due to personal reasons. However, Vijender Singh will still fight as the favorite due to his experience from the amateur career that has helped him to become the most feared boxer in the circuit rather than an underdog.
