Narendra Batra, the Hockey India president announced the Indian Hockey team for Rio games on Tuesday. PR Sreejesh is the new captain of Indian Hockey Team for Rio Olympics, he replaced Sardar Singh as a Captain.
Sardar captained Indian team for six nations tournament and was on rest for the Champions trophy. Now Sardar will play under Sreejesh in the Rio Olympics. SV Sunil will be Sreejesh’s deputy for the Olympic Games. Defender Birendra Lakra who played six nations tournament after recovering from a knee injury has been left out of the team for Olympics. Lakra is said to be unfit for the competition, so the selectors and the head coach Roelant Oltmans decided to keep him out of the team.
The Indian women hockey team was also announced for the Olympics. Sushila Chanu replaced Ritu Rani as captain for the Olympics. Ritu Rani has been dropped out of the team and sent to the preparatory camp as there was no improvement in her performance and she also had attitude issues.
