Nita Ambani- The First Indian Woman Member Of International Olympic Committee.

On Thursday, Nita Ambani the chairperson and  founder of the Reliance Foundation scripted her name in history as she became the first Indian woman of International Olympic Committee. Nita was elected at the 129th IOC Session in Rio on Thursday, after being nominated for the post in June this year.

Nita, who also founded the Indian Super League football tournament, is the only member from India who has been appointed. Her appointment at the world body lasts until she attains the age of 70.

Nita has been selected with the independent selection process which follows a new procedure for the recruitment of  International Olympic Committee members which is based on the Olympic Agenda 2020 recommendations.

Nominated candidates are done so wholly on merit and then they are elected by the existing International Olympic Committee members. Among all the eight candidates Nita polled the highest percentage (92.20 percent) of valid votes.

Nita has been involved in promoting education, sports, health and art, culture as well as multiple sports in the country with the focus on developing talent. The grassroots programmes initiated by her have reached out to over 3 million children in multiple sports.

After being elected at the 129th IOC Session in Rio Nita said,”I am truly humbled and overwhelmed to be elected by the IOC. This is a recognition of the growing importance of India in the world stage and a recognition for Indian women.”

She said that she has always believed in the power of sport to shape the youth and she believes that sports brings together communities, cultures, and generations have the power to unify and unite people. She added that she look forward to spreading the spirit of Olympics and sports across India.

The first person to represent India in the International Olympic Committee was Sir Dorabji Tata.
