He is now a former Formula 1 driver, a personality that’s been polarised like no other. A talented driver chastised often for driving in a rather absurd fashion, often swinging out of control causing direct on-track incidences for which the others were little to be blamed. Once a talented midfielder who soon lost touch and became effectively, a back marker, Romain Grosjean sprung to worldwide attention for yet another crash last year at Bahrain 2020, albeit putting his own life in mortal danger that time around, instead of driving dangerously to cause dismay to another.
And soon one saw the very man subjected to vile, even deplorable descriptions being hailed sentimentally for he put himself out of what can only be called a towering inferno like any brave life saver would as his Haas car split into half colliding directly with the rancid barriers at Sakhir thanks to a freak opening lap incident.
Since then, Romain Grosjean’s stocks have improved massively, and it’s only strange that for an otherwise nice, warm-hearted man, it took a life threatening accident to make him popular again not his racing exploits.
Regardless, there was a lot of joy in the paddock when it was reportedly confirmed that Romain Grosjean would be testing a Mercedes 2021 car and the too, in front of his home fans at the upcoming French Grand Prix. But now since the event has been delayed or pushed by another week, it doesn’t seem as if the French-Swiss driver will get the laurels of his home fans at La Castellet.
As a result of this delay, the Frenchman, who’s now committed to IndyCar will not get a chance to get behind the wheels of the very machine where the likes of Hamilton and Bottas have been seen roaring away in great fashion.
And the development, apparently has left Toto Wolff disenchanted who was so looking forward to have Romain Grosjean swoop around the twisty Circuit Paul Ricard.
Here’s what GP Fans website had to say-
Mercedes was set to give Grosjean the chance to perform demonstration laps during the grand prix weekend at Paul Ricard before completing a test in the days following.
But the demo run will not now happen due to a clash with the Frenchman’s IndyCar commitments.
Wolff, meanwhile, added with frustration-
“It’s a shame for the French Grand Prix because we had a nice programme planned with Romain and the car and some laps for the fans on the weekend and we can’t do that now.
He’s still going to get a proper test thereafter. And with Austria, obviously, for all the teams there is no better place to be – 10 days in Austria, in the mountains. It’s the right back-to-back.”
