Watch: When Brad Hodge’s Bat Went Airborne And Broke Peter Nevill’s Jaw

Australian wicketkeeper Peter Nevill got injured after being hit by Brad Hodge’s bat during a Big Bash League match between Melbourne Renegades and Adelaide Strikers on 16th January.

Chasing the 172 runs target given by Melbourne Renegades, Brad Hodge was the only hope for Adelaide Striker with 43 runs needed off the last 18 balls. Hodge was looking for an almighty heave on the leg side in order to take his team closer to the target but mistimed the shot. However, the swing was so hard that the bat slipped out of his hands flung towards Melbourne Renegades’ wicketkeeper, Peter Nevill.

The perfectionist Peter Nevill is, he was watching the Kookaburra go to the deep backward square leg when Hodge’s bat smashed right into the side of his face. Having no idea of what was coming towards him, the former Australian player was stunned when the handle hit him. Players and medical staff rushed towards him as he laid down on the ground.

We have seen several cricket injuries but this was a freak accident. The kind of excitement and adrenaline rush this T20 format brings to the ground, especially for the players, they tend to sweat in some of the most shivering conditions, gloves being drenched, we have seen bats going airborne on various occasions but this time luck was not at the side of Peter Nevill.

Fortunately, the wicketkeeper was able to walk out of the stadium on his legs and have passed a concussion test as of now. However, he has been treated for a suspected broken jaw and we hope to see him play very soon.

Noticeably, Peter Nevill was also forced out of the Renegade’s game on 9th January against Sydney Sixers when a return throw from a fielder bounced awkwardly and struck the wicketkeeper on the head.
