David Warner set an example of genuine sportsmanship during the IPL 2017 match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Lions, which the former won by nine wickets and rallied to the top of IPL 2017 league tally.
After the bad blood between the Australia and India in the recently concluded Test series, it was perhaps a well-judged decision by David Warner to lend a helping hand to an Indian player during the Indian Premier League clash.
The match was more or less a one-sided game as Gujarat Lions ended up giving an easy target of just 136 runs to the Hyderabad side and the hosts roped in a comfortable nine-wicket win. However, it was the 10th over where the crowd went crazy and witnessed an incident that will definitely be included in the top funny moments of IPL 2017.
Moises Henriques (52*) hit a ball down the ground and the bowler, Basil Thampi tried to stop it, losing his shoe in the process. David Warner, as humble as a man he is, picked up his shoe and gave it back to Thampi, on his way to the striker’s end.
The silent ground erupted into cheers and Henriques looked back with a shock, thinking what the hell exactly happened. A single triggering this much fire among the crowd is as rare as Warner being subjected to a controversy and this might be the reason behind Henriques’ reaction.
Obviously, David Warner wouldn’t have made this nice gesture if time was an issue, but since he had all the time for an easy single, his actions eventually ended up winning over the fans. The opener, later on, scored an unbeaten 76 to guide the Sunrisers to a victory over Gujarat Lions.
The Australian side was highly criticised for their actions and remarks during the last leg of Virat Kohli-led team’s home season and while the Aussie captain, Steven Smith, is going side by side with the former Indian skipper MS Dhoni, despite being the Villain No.1, David Warner’s sportsmanship might end up healing the relations between the two sides.
Well, by the reaction of the crowd, it already seems healed to some extent!!
