In a piece of news that won’t divide-but please everyone- it appears, that Shardul Thakur is all set to make it to Team India’s T20 World Cup squad. In 2021 alone, the Maharashtra cricketing talent has scored 186 Test runs from 3 games, which includes three half centuries, both coming in mighty important causes for his team.
Against Australia, he held the baton along with Washington Sundar, another promising all round cricketer who’s already made his presence felt at the highest annals of the competition. And then, against England, Shardul Thakur, as seen recently struck a mighty fine 67 at the Fourth Test, a knock of ferocity and intent that helped his team take a commanding position in a must-win contest to ensure a series lead over the hosts England.
Moreover, Shardul Thakur, a simple, unassuming cricketer took each of his fourteen (14) Test wickets in 2021, thus ensuring that the year that’s so often been about different COVID 19 waves and virus variants would become a memorable one for his cricketing exploits.
With another Test match to go, which will eventually decide the fate of the ongoing series, it remains to be seen whether Thakur, who was at his best in the limited overs series Down Under, can strike some mighty fine blows. Though the possibility of that is more real than ever, instead of being in the realm of uncertainty given the rich vein of form the Palghar-born talent has been in.
It had been known that prior to arriving in England, Shardul Thakur spent a considerable amount of time in the nets to improve that aspect of his cricket, which he and his team thought had to improve only for the entire unit’s cause: batting.
And it’s precisely in that very aspect of the game where Shardul Thakur has risen into being a mighty fine force, which actually allows one of the world’s strongest Test sides to bat deep, much like teams such as Australia and England themselves.
Every cricketer wishes to play a World Cup and that the possibility of appearing in one now seems certain for the committed force is more heartening than just beautiful.
Moreover, that at 29, Shardul Thakur isn’t a cricketing newborn goes on to say that everything is possible for as long as one doesn’t give up.
Perhaps it may not be wrong to suggest that back in 2018, he might not have been a cricketer you’d have taken very seriously. But now, approaching 30 as he’s striking big with nearly every passing contest given the select few opportunities that come his way, it is pretty evident that the tide is changing for the one who persisted.
India are yet to announce their T20 World Cup 2021 squad but what can be said with a certain amount of certainty instead of sound circumspect is that both Shardul Thakur and the returning Shreyas Iyer are likely to make it to the squad.
Iyer, the dashing right-hander, who also captains the Delhi Capitals, had been sidelined for several months altogether in the face of a torrid injury.
But then now is the time to rise again. And what could be better than shining bright in the mother of all T20 battles: the world cup itself?
