At this point, one wonders what’s the latest piece of development where it comes to the T20 world cup? Is it going to happen or not?
Does anyone have any certainty about a fest that was so highly anticipated?
It’s the men’s world cup that all were excited about and still are, regardless of the lockdown phase. Luckily though, the women’s T20 world cup was staged successfully and prior to the Coronavirus -phase and we saw what a thrill it was.
The sight of the Australia women’s cricket team lifting their fifth trophy was truly spectacular, India going down valiantly in a fight.
It was, therefore, being touted that the 2020 edition of the men’s T20 World Cup would be a whirlwind fest of sorts which is when the sporting calendar of the entire world fell into a spiral all thanks to the COVID-19 chaos.
And here we are. There are days where there arises a piece of news suggesting that this may be possible but maybe not before the fag end of the year. Probably December 2020.
Then there are days where we just don’t know whether that’s even true or for that matter, who can be believed.
A few hours back, it was told that the Men’s T20 World Cup has been deferred to the year after 2021. Can you believe that? Let it be asked- just how many actually expected such news?
And there we have it again: there’s been a constant barrage of news updates circulating over the World Wide Web surrounding one of the most keenly-expected cricketing events on the calendar.
And believe it or not, here’s yet another piece of news.
So what do we have here?
In the words of the famous print daily The Hindu, this is what’s making news at the moment:
“The ICC Board met via teleconference today with all agenda items deferred until June 10, 2020, following a discussion, led by Chairman Shashank Manohar, around the issue of confidentiality,” read a statement from the ICC on Thursday.
“…The Board also requested the ICC management to continue its discussions with stakeholders in exploring various contingency options in light of the rapidly changing public health situation caused by the coronavirus.”
Meanwhile, Cricket Australia did also maintain that there may be a possibility of seeing a full-fledged series against India later this summer.
But before that, there’s more to the developing cricket story and you need to pay attention to the following:
India’s tour of Australia has been divided into two parts: T20I series pre-T20 World Cup, and Test and ODI series to be played after the global event.
Besides the T20 World Cup, the meeting was supposed to finalise the election process for appointing Manohar’s successor as ICC chairman, and deal with the issue of BCCI’s inability to secure tax exemption from the government for next year’s T20 World Cup.
That being said, just come to think of it, if the Men’s T20 world cup is actually pushed further down the road. Think 2021!
Think how strange it might be to wait for such a long tenure, isn’t it? As it is, the last T20 world cup was back in 2016. If you were to think about it, that’s around half a decade back in time.
This time, the West Indies, though mighty defenders may still be looking to cash on another glory. Though, at the same time, the trinity of India, England, and hosts Australia- if at all, the series is held Down Under- will certainly play the dangerous counterattacking forces
Right? What do you think?
That said, for now, the only thing one can do is to wait patiently.
