It’s a fact that none can dispute that ahead of the IPL 2022 season, Virat Kohli was picked in the IPL mega auction for a sum of INR 15 crores. That is no ordinary sum; it happens to be an amount that may can perhaps not accommodate the right amount of zeroes to.
Yet, the very batsman famously known for his hunger to hit daddy hundreds emerged with 341 runs from as many as sixteen games. His strike was found wanting as were the number of fifties hit: 2. Just 2- let that sink in.
More noticeably, the batsman who had cultivated a reputation for scoring extensively in the IPL, having also topped the run charts by scoring in excess of 950 runs in the 2016 season, ended the campaign with a highest score of 73.
Though, thankfully for the RCB contingent, there were players like Dinesh Karthik and as one recently found out, Rajat Patidar who came up with the goods when the big guns quite simply failed to get going that helped the team along its way.
But while there’ve not been many- rather understandably so- from Kohli’s own Indian set up who’ve been vocal about the idea that the right-hander should consider a break, there are some others who speak their mind.
And perhaps it makes sense to say that, they won’t really hold themselves back from speaking their minds. That’s not only because they have nothing to lose but also because of the fact that they won’t come under much scrutiny from the end of the Indian cricket establishment for holding their view, unpopular that it may seem.
Among this rare lot is a certain Brett Lee, who too is of the opinion that the great batting legend from India, Virat Kohli could consider a break from the sport.
While there’s no real sense in arguing or stretching the point that probably Virat Kohli does need a break at this point in time, probably there are tens of lakhs of fans out there who may not necessarily think so.
Truth be told, not a day goes by on social media where countless fans do not put forth their encouraging opinion
The above told, what exactly did Brett Lee say on the great batsman who finds himself in a bit of weather where the consistencies of the bat are concerned?
The following is what Brett Lee shared during a recent interaction with the Indian Express:
The hardest thing is when Virat Kohli doesn’t score runs, generally the team doesn’t do well. When we see Kohli had that purple patch, when he got 800-900 runs in that season (IPL 2016) his team (Royal Challengers Bangalore) fared pretty well. We want more from Kohli.
“A strong Kohli is a strong team. Unfortunately he missed out in the semis; he could not get his team to cross the line of his own bat, getting less than 10 runs. “Maybe (it is) a chance for Kohli to go back and try work on a few things and maybe just have a rest from cricket. Just get away and just freshen up the mind.”
As a matter of fact, several big players from the Indian team including Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and Virat Kohli have actually been rested from the forthcoming T20I series that India will play against South Africa.
