Indian cricketers are experimenting with the pink ball at domestic tournaments. Recently Indian pacer Mohammed Shami and wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha had shared positive reviews of the pink ball.
Arindam Ghosh, who represents Railways in the Ranji Trophy, created history as he became the first batsman to score century with pink ball in India in a four-day Super League final under lights at Eden Gardens on Monday.
A day after India seamer Mohammed Shami welcomed the pink ball in his five-wicket haul, Ghosh’s brilliant ton (125) made it clearer that pink ball is not only beneficial for bowlers but also for batsmen.
He was not out on 49 on his overnight score and fought severe hot and humid condition in the afternoon to lead his team to 349 from 88.1 overs in the 2nd innings, setting Bhowanipore a target of 496 runs.
Ghosh struck over long on to create the history, three overs ahead tea break as he scored 11 fours and 5 sixes in his batting off 225 balls. He bided on the crease for five long hours and nine minutes.
He made batting with pink ball effortless as he gave an 84-run partnership with Anustup Majumdar (39), while No 8 batsman Sanjib Sanyal made 75 runs partnership with 51 off just 68 balls including 7 fours and 1 six.
In response, Bhowanipore struck 132 runs for 6 wkts in 35 overs, they still need 364 runs to win. Shami (2 for 79) got the first two wickets in a marathon 15-over spell.
Pacers Sourav Mondal (2-14) and Vivek Singh (2-9) also got two wickets each.
