Nobel Physics Prize 2016 Announced

This year Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to British-born scientists David Thouless, Duncan Haldane and Michael Kosterlitz on Tuesday at Stockholm for ‘revealing the secrets of exotic matter’.

Exotic matter is any kind of matter which is non-baryonic i.e., not made of baryons or subatomic particles such as neutrons and protons.

According to the Royal Swedish Academy of Science, these three scientists showed the way to the world where matter takes unusual phases or states, which was unknown before their research. They were awarded for their ‘theoretical discoveries of topological phase transitions and topological phases of matter.

The Nobel Prize is generally awarded to a discovery not before 10 years of the findings to let it face the test of time. The research was conducted in 1970’s and 1980’s making it eligible for the award.

David Thouless, 82, is a former professor of University of Washington. Duncan Haldane,65,is a physics professor at Princeton University, New Jersey. Michael Kosterlitz,73, also serves as a physics professor in Rhode Island at Brown University.

2016 Nobel Prize announcements commenced on Monday where Japanese biologist Yoshinori Ohsumi was awarded with the Medicine Award for his discoveries in Autophagy(It is the process in which a cell breaks down and recycles its content).

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry will be announced on Wednesday while the Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on Friday. Cash Prize of $930000 is given to each award winner and on 10 December, the Death Anniversary of Nobel Prize Founder, Alfred Nobel, the awardees will also collect a Diploma and Medal at the ceremony.
