Improper Hair Care Worsens Itchy Scalp

Itchy scalp troubles many people. However, itchy scalp is not the cause but just a symptom. The trigger is often the wrong hair care. Let’s explain what needs to be done to cure itchy scalp the right way.

Itchy scalp is enough to drive anyone crazy. Upon that, constant head scratching makes everything worse. Redness, dandruff and even bloody spots are not uncommon when the itchiness on the head becomes excessive. If left untreated, this may lead to hair loss as well.

Dry scalp is the most common cause

Fungi on the scalp are often responsible for the itching. This can be due to the condition like in the case of neurodermatitis. However, the most common cause is dehydration of the scalp. Washing the hair incorrectly can also dry out the sensitive scalp. Hot water, frequent washing, too much shampoo and shampoo residues are a real challenge for the scalp.

Anti-dandruff shampoos are too aggressive for the skin

The choice of shampoo also affects scalp health. Many have suffered permanent hair loss because of using wrong shampoos for a long time. Many people use dandruff shampoo for itchy scalp. However, these generally increase the dryness and itching increases. This is because aggressive ingredients used in the shampoo are not tolerated by the skin of many people. Conventional shampoos contain substances such as zinc pyrithione, selenium disulfide or piroctone-olamine. Organic shampoos, on the other hand, are comparatively gentler. Thyme, juniper or clay are often used in organic shampoos, however, both types of shampoos are not suitable for long-term therapy.

Silicones damage the scalp

Silicones in shampoos can also significantly disturb the balance on the head and affect the fat and moisture balance. Silicones work like a plastic cap and damages hair and scalp.Though, the pH-neutral shampoos without silicone, fragrances, colors and preservatives are better. In addition to sensitive shampoos for adults, baby shampoos are a possible alternative to the other hair washing products because they degrease the scalp less and often contain additional care substances, such as olive oil. Everyone has to try out which shampoo best tolerates their scalp.

Oil massage can help

A little oil that is gently massaged into the scalp can also be beneficial. It is best to leave the oil treatment on overnight. Coconut oil, for example, makes a lot of sense due to its calming effect on the skin and its slightly antibacterial and antifungal effects also help with the treatment of infection on the itchy scalp.

Olive oil also has a calming effect on the stressed scalp. However, since olive oil is difficult to wash out, the dermatologist recommends applying it together with castor oil to make it easier to wash your hair afterwards.

Consult a Doctor If Itchiness Remains

If the itching does not go away despite mild shampoo, regular oil treatments and an extended washing interval, you should consult a dermatologist. In addition to allergies, eczema or a fungal infection can also be behind the symptoms. Only a thorough examination of the scalp would help in determining the true cause behind the itchy scalp.
