Looks like everything in India will soon be banned other than breathing owing to the fact that we have seen a lot of bans in last two years. From beef ban to Padmavati outrage, it just states that people in our country have a problem with almost everything.
The BJP ruled civic body in Delhi has prohibited non-vegetarian food displayed in the open on stalls outside restaurants and eateries of South Delhi stating that it’s unhygienic and hurts the sentiments of vegetarians.
BJP-ruled South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) will take their final decision on 3rd January outlining terms and conditions of the ban.
Raj Dutt has proposed this policy and Nandini Sharma has approved it stating that food items displayed in the open posed a danger of “contamination” and also “hurt the sentiments of the vegetarian public”.
The proposal states that actions will be taken against the owners as per the municipal law, who would display non-vegetarian items in public
Restaurants have been displaying items such as roasted chicken, kebabs and shawarma outside their premises.
The leader of the BJP house Shikha Rai, has stated that the concern after proposing this ban is hygiene and sentiments of vegetarian people and it has come from members of the health committee of the house
She also stated that such restaurants that display non-veg food outside their premises attracts dogs and raise hygiene issue. Such display also hurts the sentiments of people who are vegetarian.
The SDMC stated that the confirmation about the ban will be announced after the next meeting that is scheduled on 3rd January. However, it will take at least two months to frame the policy with accurate terms and condition. Only after this, the ban will be rolled out as per the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act.
Hygiene can be considered as the prime issue but the statement that display of non-vegetarian food hurts the image of vegetarians seems too vague. Have you ever spotted a non-vegetarian complaining about the display of vegetarian food? The fact is that our country is becoming resistant to everything from food to movies to lifestyle. Are we really developing or it’s time to accept that we live in an intolerant country?
