5 Food Items To Absolutely Avoid In Monsoon

Food and monsoon have a different kind of connection which is basically replaceable. For me, rains always bring back the memories of my childhood where the first few drops of rain will immediately call for a celebration with mandatory Chai and Pakoras or Samosas, for that matter. These simple snacks were always the entertainment that everyone in my family looked forward too. However, there were certain things that were strictly prohibited in the monsoon.

And, if you also have parents who are very conscious about what their kids eat then you’ll definitely relate to my pain. While some of these prohibited food items broke my heart, there were definitely some things whose prohibition felt like hitting a jackpot. However, they did it only and only to protect us from the wrath of immediately illness that monsoon brings with itself. One just can’t deny the fact that our body becomes more prone to illness in the monsoon that includes flu and a series of infections. And, as the saying goes – Prevention is better than cure, we all should try to consume much more healthy food in this season or at least things that are made at home with clean and fresh ingredients which are a tough call to find in restaurants or street vendors.

So, today I decided to gather a list of the food items that should strictly be avoided during the monsoon season to save yourself from the running nose. Apart from that, who does want to be in bed with illness rather than enjoying themselves in this weather?

1. Green Leafy Vegetables

All our lives we have been told to consume more and more of green leafy vegetables, however, Monsoon is the time when it should be avoided at any cost. The grime and dampness present in them make them highly susceptible to germs.

2. Seafood

There’s a huge variety of Seafood out there which has not been explored by a lot of us. However, if you do love it or even want to try it once, then spare yourself for now. Monsoon is said to be the worst time to have seafood as it is the breeding season for fish and prawns.

3. Fried Food

As much as we all love pakoras and samosas, try to limit the consumption of fried food in this season. The highly humid monsoon weather causes our digestion process to slow down. Plus, if you even want to have it, then try the beauty of your kitchen to make it and not some roadside vendor.

4. Fruit Juices From Street Vendors

Again, fruits juices are considered to be the healthiest thing on this planet, however, consuming them in monsoon is a huge mistake that should be avoided at all cost. Any fresh food items that have had a long exposure to the monsoon air should be avoided. Roadside vendors have the fruits cut up well in advance, which could have come in contact with contaminated air. Stick to fresh fruit juice prepared at home and consume it instantly.

5. Fizzy Drinks

Fizzy Drinks are another thing that comes with a lot of problems in your life. Fizzy drinks reduce minerals in our body and this is highly undesirable for the already weak digestive system. Instead, have plain water or fresh nimbu pani, and feel all the more refreshed in this season.

While these are the things that you should absolutely avoid in the monsoon season, try to have as much water as possible. Even when you’re not thirsty, your body is dehydrating so in order to keep your body feeling refreshed, have as much water as possible.
