There are so many stories and tell-tales we hear almost on a daily basis that recites the journey of someone who went through a lot before hitting jackpot in life. Haven’t we all? The life-story of Carsten Schertzer, owner of Illumina Studio, is somewhat similar to these inspiring stories.

He picked up his first camera at the age of 11 and completely fell in love with the idea of capturing a moment for forever. More than that, he fell in love with capturing the skateboard culture. He dreamt of becoming an ace skateboarding photographer and wanted to earn a living while doing it.

At age 16, he drops out of high school and was living on the streets of southern California. This includes sleeping in public parks and friends’ couches, however, there was one thing that he still dreamt about and it was to make it big in the skateboarding industry as a photographer.

At age 18, he still was nowhere near his dreams of becoming a professional skate photographer, however, soon he realised it was time for a change. He packed his bags and decided to drive to San Francisco to become a wedding photographer. He spent weeks living in the car and used the good-old Starbucks as his office. Slowly, using his skateboarding portfolio as his only reference, Carsten was able to start booking clients, eventually turning weddings into a full-time job.

As of today, Carsten in 24 years old and has travelled to 12 countries, on 4 continents all because of his award-winning wedding photography. His life right now includes constantly hopping from one fancy wedding to another one, all because he finally was on the track that he was meant to be.
