Barack Obama Nominates White Judge As Apex Court Nominee

United States President Barack Obama picks a white judge over American-Indian Sri Srinivasan as his nominee to the Supreme Court. This nomination sets up a dramatic political fight between Obama and Senate Republicans. The Senate Republicans have vowed to block Obama’s choice.

Obama nominated Merrick Garland, who is 63 years old and is a judge in the US Court of Appeals for District of Columbia. Merrick is much older than Srinivasan and the remaining contenders on the short list such as judges Paul Watford and Jane Kelly.

Obama praised Merrick in a speech in the White House Rose Garden by saying he is a graduate of Harvard and Harvard Law School and is also an appointee of  president Bill Clinton as  “one of America’s sharpest legal minds”.

Barack Obama has narrowed down his list after conducting interviews last week. Now his short list includes the name of Srinivasan, Merrick and Watford. Each of the nominees is considered ‘consensus’ candidates for their history in gaining confirmation support from Republicans.

The Senate Republicans said that the next president should be able to choose a replacement for justice  Antonin Scalia. They made it clear that they do not plan to vet or have hearings on the nominee.

The presidential term of Barack Obama is left for only 10 months and democrats argued that there is an enough time for the senate to confirm a new justice.

The supporters of Merrick also argued and said that the senators could not refuse the nomination as Obama is still the running President.

Obama send an email for the final announcement he wrote :I’ve made my decision.” “I’ve devoted a considerable amount of time and deliberation to this decision,” he wrote.

“I’ve consulted with legal experts and people across the political spectrum, both inside and outside government. And we’ve reached out to every member of the Senate, who each have a responsibility to do their job and take this nomination just as seriously.”
