West Bengal state government’s cabinet is all set to give their state a new name. It is very likely to be called only ‘Bengal’ in English and ‘Bongo’ or ‘Bangla’ in Bengali.
On Tuesday the state government’s cabinet accepted the proposal and said that it will be forward to the centre after the West Bengal Assembly will ratify it. The state Assembly will hold a special session to ratify this proposal and the chances of approval are higher as the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) has a majority in the House.

If the name change gets approved by the board, it will require a Constitutional amendment to effect the change. It is a long-standing demand that finally received an approval of the state Assembly.
The British partitioned the then ‘Bengal Province‘ into two parts, one became Hindu-dominated West Bengal and other became Muslim-dominated East Bengal. After the Partition the East Bengal was East Pakistan and after it won independence from Pakistan in 1972, it was renamed as Bangladesh.
The proposal is looking to change the name of West Bengal to only Bengal in English and ‘Pashchim Bengal’ to either ‘Bangla’ or ‘Bongo’, in Bengali.
