New Delhi: Taking a step further towards making railways free from human discharge, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu inaugurated India’s first green corridor – 114-km long Rameswaram-Manmadurai route on Sunday.
10 passenger trains comprising of 286 coaches running on the section have been provided with bio-toilets. It will make the corridor free from any type of human waste on the track.
Suresh Prabhu did the inauguration from the Chennai station via video conferencing. This initiative from the railways is par of PM Narendra Modi‘s pet project – Swachch Bharat Mission.
The railways took up the mammoth task of providing human discharge free bio-toilets in all its coaches and the project is slated to be complete by September 2019.
By June this year, Railways have already provided around 40,750 bio-toilets in the coaches. Further, the public transporter is planning to equip more coaches with 30,000 bio-toilets in the current fiscal.
The technology for Bio-toilets has been developed by Indian Railways and Defence Research & Development Organization (DRDO) through a MoU. In the bio-toilet coaches, tanks are placed below the toilets human waste is collected. This waste is then decomposed by a consortium of bacteria and finally water is discharged.
