Today’s India is the India of smart-cities. For the longest time, we have heard that the concept of smart cities, a facilitator and aggregator of all things tech-enabled in the sphere of infrastructure, powered by the Internet of Things- is going to take the country forward.
The India of tomorrow is being planned and developed in a way that can cater to the upliftment of regions that are principal to the growth of the country, but unfortunately, do not get the same share of public highlight as the mainstream urban cities of Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, and Hyderabad, so to speak.
It’s because, the India of tomorrow is about as dependent on cities that are contributing to the growth and progress of India today, just as much as the Tier-1 zones. The development of smart cities, therefore, is principal in the regions of Bhopal, Jaipur, Pune, Surat, Kochi, Ahmedabad, Jabalpur and so to speak.
That’s the way we have shaped the idea of India for futuristic development at the pan-Urban level. And that’s also the way we have tried to envisage the development of India in cities with smaller populations vis-a-vis mainstream urban Indian cities, already clogged with excessive population and over-reliance on resources.
But that said, any update in the realm of smart cities and the crucial role they are to play for the very populations they are meant to serve is both a great parable of learning as well as a key update about a sphere that often dominates discussion in the realm of infrastructure.
A key example, in this regard, is the metro city of Gurgaon; among the principal centres of urban development and education in the Delhi NCR region, besides being a great provider of divergent employment avenues for the better part of the country; in the space of smart cities.
It is believed that soon, in the not so distant future, real-time access to public services will be made available.
The key to this fascinating ‘step up’ is the Gurgaon Sector 44 and it’s IRCTC building. This is the crucial standpoint of the smart-city enabled future for the city as it is trying to integrate smart services into the future.
In fact, it’s important to note that Gurugram, in Haryana has become the first city in the densely-populated state to get an Integrated Command and Control Centre, the ICTC. This, it’s needless to state, is a crucial step in the bid to make the city a super-smart city.
Indian Express, noted the salient features of this development as it shared,”
Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) CEO V Umashankar, said, “To integrate smart services in the future, services like water supply, public WiFi facility, smart parking, monitoring and control of the power distribution system, various message signals, and property management will first be added to this control centre so that efforts can be made to provide as many services as possible to the people.”
The centre, officials said, will provide online real-time access to these facilities, and allow the evaluation and reporting of data as well as help decision-making and paperless work.”
That told, there are some key steps that need to be taken in order to integrate smart services for the course of the future. Major work will ensure that all principal administrative offices that oversee the dispensation of law and provide security to the city- including police stations and other government buildings will have to be connected to the fiber network for making the futuristic, tech-enabled project effective.
Furthermore, another important step will be the connection of all government buildings to a wi-fi network within the next six to nine months.
