It’s among the world’s greatest brand leaders in the competitive sphere of electronics. It’s a brand most swear by and few come to ditch, once they’ve experienced it. Moreover, it is among the rare brands that have shown stellar courage to take the global fight to Apple in the sprawling cellphone (handphone/mobile) market- a terse territory. Who else but Samsung could’ve established its strength in front of a dominant display by American Apple, isn’t it?
There’s more to Samsung than just being among the greatest heroes from South Korea. The intricate and mutually-respected relationship between Samsung’s South Korea and India has been scaling new heights ever since the Asian giant began its India operations (in manufacturing) decades ago.
And the bilateral ties between India and South Korea have reached a new high, following Samsung opening what is being rightly described as the ‘world’s largest phone factory.’
That told, it ought to be said, this is indeed a landmark moment in the history of among the world’s most popular and iconic brands in the contemporary fold.
It could be said, the current President Moon’s visit to India, is indeed a landmark moment for the two nations, considering the weight of trade and business relations involved. Present on July 9, 2018 on a once-in-a-lifetime moment regarding the inauguration of the Samsung phone factory in Noida were the key political, state figures from either side- involving India and South Korea.
Amongst the luminaries present at the occasion were Indian Prime Minister Modi, South Korean President Moon, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath among others.
Here are some of the outstanding facets regarding the state of the art gigantic Samsung facility:
It’s expected that the said factory, based in Noida, will be churning out as many as 120 million smartphones per year. Do figures get any more whopping than this?
Moreover, the smartphones manufactured here in Samsung’s flagship factory- a one of its kind imposing facility- will range from the customary sub-$100 model over to the fantastic, flagship S9 model, the latter having taken the brand to exciting new heights.
It is suggested that around 70 per cent of the smartphones manufactured here will be earmarked for domestic consumption. This leaves us with the remainder, which will be exported directly to countries in Europe, Western Asia as well as Africa- the trinity constituting immense value for Samsung.
It was around the last year where news surrounding the current imposing structure of Samsung gained legs. It was in 2017 where it was suggested that Samsung was planning a massive investment, approximately worth Rs 4,915 crore in its expansion plans for the already-existing Noida factory. The new unit, however, has expanded over to 35 acres and stands adjacent to an already-existing facility based in Noida’s Sector 81.
The factory, it must be mentioned, first began its India operations in 1995. In no other part of the country does Samsung enjoy such an immense spread of operations than the one in current Delhi NCR region.
And as with every new facility- regardless of new creation or expansion- comes along the anticipation or expectation regarding new jobs. And Prime Minister Modi, proudly suggested that the Noida facility seeks to create as many as 1000 new jobs- which is a big plus. Thus far, Samsung already has 70,000 people on its payroll- an emphatic number by all counts.
Popular business and economics journal Money Control had the following to share in relation with the Samsung Noida facility:
In the current capacity, India attributes to 10 per cent of the overall production capacity of Samsung. Through this plant, the South Korean conglomerate aims to take it to 50 per cent over the next three years. They also expect an increase in smartphone users from 299 million in 2017 to 340 million by the end of the year.
