As Cases Soar In India, There’s Trouble In Bangalore, The Garden City Of India

There’s much loved stored for one of the most charming and alluring cities of India, Bangalore. Chances are, if you were to step out to conduct a general survey about what’s hot in the city, then eight in ten would commend the charming and breezy weather of the city. It’s a city that has a refined taste in music- whether one speaks of jazz or rock genres. The vibe of creativity and the vibrant culture of entrepreneurship have for decades shaped a destination fondly described as the ‘Garden City’ of India. But all of that told, if there’s a general concern plaguing one of the most highly-rated cities of the country then it is nothing else than the COVID 19 trouble, one that’s engulfed much of India.

So this brings us to the question- just what is the matter with everyone’s favourite city?

Believe it or not, but in the last 24 hours, Bangalore recorded the highest toll of COVID cases in a single day.

And what’s more? The Chief Minister of Karnataka BS Yediyurappa has already spilled the beans speaking in no uncertain terms that the situation is out of control.

But the above hardly indicates the intricacy of the problem currently being faced by the city; there’s a very visible dearth of beds available in government hospitals around the city.

This last Friday, an undesirable episode in the city of Bangalore stormed to everyone’s attention when an ‘ICU On Wheels,” a dedicated facility provided by the Victoria hospital arrived at the government-run hospital.

The main objective was to cater to a gravely ill COVID-19 patient with the 40-year-old looking for a bed.

And not long after the arrival of the dedicated facility arrived a treacherous piece of news. After about 30 minutes of waiting (to find the bed), the family of the patient was simply told that they should try elsewhere as no bed was available.

Imagine the plight of those aggrieved by the COVID menace? Imagine being turned out when all you’ve done is wait and that too, patiently?

But if you see the vantage point, then you’d find that there’s trouble brewing for the authorities with the number of cases rising and a sharp spike in deaths.

Here’s what the Indian Express happened to report from the city:

At present, there are officially only 117 ICU ventilator beds dedicated for Covid-19 patients in the city across 17 government hospitals. The Karnataka government is now also trying to get private hospitals with more than 30 beds to hand over 80 per cent of their beds to the government for Covid-19 patients.

“All nursing homes and hospitals with up to and less than 30 beds should mandatorily treat non-Covid patients. All hospitals that have bed capacity of more than 30 will now have to dedicate 80 percent of the beds and ICU facility to the state government – so far it was only 50 percent and now it will be 80 percent,” state Health Minister K Sudhakar said.

What one of the much-loved cities of India needs is for its healthcare professionals and medical facilities to pull up their socks else one will have to unfortunately counter the dire straits that other regions in the country, such as Delhi NCR, Rajasthan and Maharashtra are already facing.
