Pakistan Releases 220 Indian Fishermen and 5 Other Updates

1. Man Shot Dead in Baramulla

An unidentified gunman shot dead a Kashmir resident in Baramulla District on Sunday. Officials have identified the deceased as Nazir Ahmad Mir and he was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him ‘brought dead’. The gunman is suspected to be a militant and search operations are underway to nab him.

2. Pakistan Releases 220 Indian Fishermen

Pakistani Government released 220 fishermen who allegedly entered Pakistan’s territorial waters illegally while fishing. In a bid to ease tensions between the two nations, this decision came as a goodwill gesture from the neighboring country. After being released from Malir Jail, the freed fishermen are expected to enter Indian territory from Wagah Border. Another group of 219 Indian fishermen will be released on 5th January, next year.

3. 40 Injured, 3 Critical in Sabarimala Stampede

At Least 40 people were injured including three critical during a stampede at Sabarimala Temple in Kerala on Sunday night. Monday being a key day of the 2 months long Sabarimala festival, there was a huge rush of devotees at the temple on Sunday. Due to the rush, a barricade snapped and people who were leaning on the barricade fell on each other. All the injured were taken to a nearby hospital and the situation has been brought under control by the authorities.

4. Syria Bound Russian Plane Crashed in the Black Sea

A Russian Military Plane with 92 on board passengers crashed in the black sea after it went off the radar, minutes after taking off. The debris of the Tu-154 plane was found 1.5 km from the Black Sea coast of Sochi and no survivors were reported after the rescue operation. Journalists, military staff, official army choir of the Russian armed forces and musicians from the Alexandrov Ensemble were among the deceased passengers.

5. Tsunami Warning Issued In Chile After Earthquake.

A Tsunami warning has been issued in Chile after a 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck the southern coast in Chile on Sunday. At Least 4000 people were evacuated from Los Lagos region including Biobio, Los Rios, Araucania and Aysen. In 2010, an 8.8 magnitude earthquake hit Chile, triggering a tsunami that killed 524 people.

6. Indian Rupee Gains 3 Paise against US Dollar

Indian Rupee edged by 3 paise against US Dollar during the early trade on Monday due to increased selling of American currency by banks and exporters. However, the BSE Benchmark Sensex fell to 25,912.35 points after losing 128.35 points during the morning trade.
