Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the withdrawal of old Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency on 8th November but the government set a deadline of November 24 to use the old notes at selected places for the people. To cut down on corruption and to flush out black money the circulation of the high-value currency was withdrawn and newly printed notes of Rs 500 and Rs 2000 were introduced by the Reserve Bank of India. From today midnight onwards the old  high-value currency will only be exchanged at banks till 30 December and that may increase the queue of people outside the banks and ATMs.

Here are the few selected places where you can use the old notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 until midnight:

1. Railway Ticket Counters
2. Bus Ticket Counters
3. Government Hospitals
4. Purchase of LPG gas Cylinders
5. At Petrol, CNG and diesel pumps
6. At crematoria and burial grounds
7. At metro and suburban rail counters
8. To make a court payment
9. To purchase seeds
10. Foreign tourists can exchange foreign currency up to Rs 5000.

Where most of the people are supporting the note ban, some opposition parties have accused the government of poor implementation of the demonetisation. After the ban, the lack of cash and limited circulation of new currency have resulted in chaos across the towns and villages. People crowded the Banks and ATMs gates, some deaths have been reported and ATMs were even not calibrated to dispense the new notes. Though around 40 percent of the ATMs in the country are said to be re-calibrated to dispense the new notes from Thursday but the last day of spending old currency can lead to a large-scale nation-wide chaos.
