Mahasweta Devi who was a social activist and a writer died today after a multi-organ failure. She was 90 and was admitted to the Belle Vue nursing home, on May 22. She was suffering from age-related ailments and her health was critical due to kidney disorder and blood infection.
Mahasweta Devi suffered a cardiac arrest following the multi-organ failure and died at 3.16 PM. The CEO of Belle Vue nursing home, P. Tandon said that the doctors tried their level best but suddenly her condition became very critical and she passed away.
Her writings focused on the marginalised communities in the country and she served as the voice of the oppressed. Devi was felicitated and given Landmark Literature Lifetime achievement award at NCPA.
The Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee said that India has lost a great writer and a glorious mother.
Devi was a winner of both the Jnanpith awards and Sahitya Akademi for literary excellence and a recipient of the Ramon Magsaysay award. She also won the Padma Vibhushan, the country’s second-highest civilian honour and Chandrashekar garlands Gyanpith.
