‘Kargil Vijay Diwas 2016’ – Even Special Today Than It Will Ever Be

It has been 17 years since the country had victory in the war against Pakistan at Drass. No thanks would ever be enough for the brave soldiers who fought with vigour and valour at that bone freezing temperature and breath taking heights to save us – the common Indian citizens, from the ravages of a hostile invasion. Today is just a day when special mention can be given to the memories of the dear departed and the victorious few who live on to tell the tale of glory.

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar along with many others have paid their tribute at the ‘Amar Jawan Jyoti’ at India Gate in Delhi.

The PM posted this tweet:

The Indian Army commemorated the epic victory over Pakistan with a week long celebrations which ended today on Tuesday.

The war ensued in May – July 1999 and was fought at Kargil in Kashmir and various places along the Line of Control. It was christened Operation Vijay by the Army. The war was instigated when Pakistani soldiers along with Kashmiri militants infiltrated key positions on the Indian side of the Line of Control in Kargil sector. The official declaration of the war being over and India’s victory was made on July 26, 1999.

As we sit in our plush offices and comfy homes, it is essential that we recognise the pivotal role that the armed forces play in keeping our world the way we know it and want it. They work out of our sight but we should never keep them out of our minds and hearts.

I can’t help but remember the soul stirring song “Aye mere watan ke logon” sung by Lata Mangeshkar at her first concert overseas held at the Royal Albert Hall, London, in 1974. People were moved by her voice and couldn’t contain their emotions. You may hear the patriotic tribute (1:21:40) here:

Jai Hind.
