India’s Tallest ATC Tower Now At Delhi’s IGI Airport

In a breaking piece of news, it has been confirmed that India’s tallest ATC tower is now in function. The same is now functioning at the capital city New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport.

But as the name suggests, the salient feature of India’s tallest ATC Tower is its sheer height. It’s known that at a whopping 102 meters, India’s tallest ATC tower enables the set of air traffic controllers to have better visibility of the three runways that function (and are in use) at the international airport of the capital.

In a morning ceremony at the airport, the ATC tower was inaugurated by the Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. But the towering height of the mesmerizing tower notwithstanding, one may be curious to ask as to what is the exact nature of the purpose being served by the said facility?

Business Today

To that end, it is important to note that the ATC tower is expected to enhance the safety as well as the efficiency of air transport management services over the national capital’s skies.

But that said, it is important to note that the sky-reaching tower is a composite of three different complexes. So which are these? It includes the Aerodrome Control Tower, Area and Approach Control Services Building as well as an Administrative block. The lanky image of a tall, lean tower speaking to the skies as it rises on a patch of long-stretched, spacious roads is quite eye-pleasing from New Delhi’s point of view and is a useful addition to the city’s growing infrastructure.

Central to the construction and operation of the mega tower is also a huge piece of cost. While the tower has been constructed at a whopping cost of INR 250 crore, it’s equipment cost is around INR 100 crore. Implicit in the coming up of the new aviation infrastructure facility is to ease out the operations at the Indira Gandhi International Terminal. For, after all, it is the busiest airport in all of the country.

Here’s something more on the towering infrastructure that has come up in the capital only a few hours back:

Besides the physical aspects, the tower also boasts of additional control positions, sophisticated equipment and state-of-the-art control room set-up.

In addition, the new facility opens the possibility for independent parallel approach. This allows for simultaneous landings from the same direction on parallel runways which will further increase the capacity of the airport.

Over the course of the recent past, the following string of exciting changes has come up at the international airport at New Delhi.

One of the changes that are expected shortly is that the terminal can operate up to 100 flights per hour.

Currently, work on the fourth runway is underway. The above will be achieved soon as the new runway is operational, taking the load off the existing three runways.

It is expected that the daily movement of flights in the near future may even rise to an incredible 200 flights in the next two years. Currently handling around 70 million passengers, the famous IGI terminal is one of the reasons why the aviation sector in the country is rising and creating a solid contribution to the economy and thus, the GDP.
