He took his early education from The Bishop’s School which is located in the city of Pune, after which he went to St. Edmund’s School, Canterbury, and then finally to the University of Manchester. After his graduation, he joined the Serum Institute of India in 2001, founded by his father.
After joining the Serum Institute of India, which is the world’s largest vaccine manufacturing company based on the number of doses they produce every day, he focused mainly on the international market of the company. He began his career by exporting the company’s products to 35 countries and got the company a new product license.
It got pre-qualification by the World Health Organization (WHO) for its supply to the United Nations Agencies which also included UNICEF and PAHO. In the year 2011, he became the Chief Executive Officer of the Serum Institute of India. In 2012, a very important role was played by him for the acquisition of Bilthoven Biologicals, which is a governmental vaccine manufacturing company in the Netherlands.
Adar Poonawalla is also a board member of the GAVI Alliance, which is the global alliance for vaccines. In 2014, he initiated and launched the Serum Institute’s oral polio vaccine, which became an overall bestseller for the company. By the year 2015, he was known to have exported their products to nearly 140 countries and 85% of the revenues made by it were from abroad, which is a great thing as India has been much more of an importer than an exporter, in various industries.
Adar Poonawalla got married to Natasha Poonawalla, Adar Poonawalla wife, in the year 2006, who is an Indian businesswoman, and Chairperson of the Villoo Poonawalla Foundation, and Executive Director of Serum Institute of India. She is also a fashion enthusiast and a celebrity. They met at a New Year’s party which was hosted by Vijay Mallya and fell in love with each other. They have two sons, named Cyrus and Darius Poonawalla.
