112 To Become The Single Number For All The Emergency Services In India

112 may soon become the single number for all the emergency services in India. People will have to dial just a single number for help during the situations of Emergency. This new service could be rolled out within a year. 112 will be used to avail services of police, ambulance, and the fire department.

Inter-ministerial panel Telecom Commission approved the proposal to have a single number for various emergency services. This proposal is similar to the all in one emergency service 911 in the US. As soon as this service starts, all the various existing emergency numbers will be phased out within a year.

According to a PTI report, an official said, “Telecom Commission has accepted Trai’s recommendation on single emergency number 112. It will now be drafted by the Department of Telecom and will require Telecom Minister (Ravi Shankar Prasad) approval. It will be rolled out within months rather than a year.

The source also said that the recommendations of the Telecom Regulatory Authority Of India has accepted by the panel after including clarifications given by it.

India has different emergency response systems which has their own individual numbers like Police (100), Fire Brigade (101), Ambulance (102), Woman in Distress—181 (Delhi), Missing Children and Women—1094 (Delhi), Crime Against Women—1096 (Delhi), Police Headquarter Helpline—1090 (Uttar Pradesh), etc. For all these services, a person will need to call 112 and from there a call will be directed to concerned department. The service will also be available on the landline and mobile phones whose outgoing services has been stopped or barred.
