What Are Condom-Makers In Japan Worried With As The Tokyo Olympics Near?

They are recognized as one of the best global sporting events ever. They are, the realm of sport, the equivalent of the Academy Awards in the film world. Grand. Larger than life. When an athlete reaches this revered international mark, then one can truly say that he or she has arrived in the true sense of the word. Moreover, success in this global sporting extravaganza simply raises the equity, worth and repute of an athlete like no other sporting contest can or will. The Olympics, truth be told, are a once-in-a-lifetime event and a contest like no other.

Yet, there’s something that worries condom-makers in Japan with the fast-approaching Olympics. Now, on the outset, this might read rather strange. Why should a global sporting spectacle of the honor and reverence as the Tokyo Olympics concern the condom makers in Japan.

But take it for granted, there’s a real sense of worry. Truth is, with tens of thousands visiting the The Olympics, hordes of eager tourists and visitors are distributed condoms. as simply put, the condom sales increase during such an event.

But with a ban being imposed on the visitors to the upcoming Tokyo Olympics, along with stricter virus rules, the current period seems to be one stymied by concerns and issues for the condom makers in Japan.

Restricted entries to the Tokyo Olympics is a direct threat to the sale of condoms. Moreover, tighter restrictions during the conduct of the said games are set to deflate the hopes of the condom makers in the ‘land of the rising sun!’

The sales, profit margins, the revenues.. all of these are poised to be hit with a whiplash blow where the impending Tokyo Olympics and distributors of condoms are concerned!

A rather uncanny and unpromising situation for the manufacturers of the ultra-thin prophylactics.

Here’s what a news platform in India had to report on the trending story from the mighty economic powerhouse of Asia:

Since the 1988 Seoul Games, hundreds of thousands of free condoms have been distributed at the Olympics, to encourage safe sex as the world’s elite athletes mingle at close quarters.

While organisers are still expected to hand out 160,000 at the pandemic-postponed Games, which start next month, virus rules should limit interaction in the Olympic Village.

The rulebook for athletes specifically warns them to “avoid unnecessary forms of physical contact”, leaving some wondering why condoms are being distributed at all.

The plan to give them out “is something I just cannot comprehend”, tweeted Ken Noguchi, a Japanese mountaineer and environmental activist.

Furthermore, a member of the organising committee of the Tokyo Olympics already shared, “The distributed condoms are not meant to be used at the Olympic Village.”

But then this leads to a pertinent question- if they are not meant to be distributed, then what is the usage of the condoms?

To that end, the response from the organising committee offered a befitting reply that the condoms are to be “Brought back by athletes to their respective home countries and to help them support the campaign to raise awareness!”
