What Brings Leonardo DiCaprio to New Delhi !

Leonardo DiCaprio was to the movies born. It was as if this child was planted in California by some happenstance of destiny. Why else would some body choose to be born in Hollywood!? He has a lineage as varied and effervescent as the roles he portrays in his movies.  Born to a German mother and a half Italian – half German father, Mr. DiCaprio is fluent in German, having spent his early childhood at his maternal grandparents’ home in Germany.

That Leonardo is one of the finest that Hollywood has to offer is no overstatement. His biography could take up much space and still not be enough to enlist all this actor has done and achieved in his career. He started off at age five acting in television series and commercials until 1992 when Robert De Niro chose him from among 400 young aspirants to play the lead role in ‘This Boy’s Life’.

His first critically acclaimed commercial success was a ‘What’s Eating Gilbert Grape’ screened in 1993, in which he played Johnny Depp’s mentally handicapped brother. Hereafter a series of hits and misses followed and scripted a Hollywood journey like no other. DiCaprios association with Martin Scorsese earned him worldwide acclaim and identity as an actor par excellence.

He has been nominated for ten Golden Globe Awards, winning two and five Academy Awards. It’s a matter of utter incomprehension when Leonardo could not actually acclaim the coveted golden statuette. Okay, people may have forgotten What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, but how could a movie such as The Aviator, Blood Diamond or The Wolf of Wall Street not win the Academy Awards? There is no denying the fact that the actor gives his all to the roles he portrays, be it speaking in a South African accent or developing and OCD. It’s really hard to say why in the whole wide world was he ever denied an Oscar.

However, our debate here is not whether he should have or shouldn’t have. The hype around this Hollywood personality is because he is rumoured to be shooting in Delhi for four days, October 29th onwards. Alas, we were not able to find out about the exact shooting locales but considering the fact that he will be shooting for his yet untitled documentary on climate change, we can all take our guesses and flock to the grounds.

It is notable to mention here that the actor runs a foundation under his own name, The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation which works through collaborative partnerships to supports innovative projects that protect vulnerable wildlife from extinction, while restoring balance to threatened ecosystems and communities.
