Madonna’s ‘Woman Of The Year’ Winning Speech Delineated The Overpowering Sexism In Society

Madonna has been a pop-culture icon for the longest time. She’s been ruling and officially slaying the American music industry since her first album which was released in the early 80s. Her constant presence in the news for anything and everything is strong proof of that, and at one point it almost seemed that the media can’t survive without publishing anything regarding Madonna.

She was recently awarded Woman Of The Year at Billboard Women in Music award ceremony. However, her speech is something that everyone should listen to, due to its relevance with sexism in the glamorous industry as well as in our society.

Misogyny has been in existence since the dawn of time and Madonna didn’t shy away from talking about it in the most gallant way possible. She was real and true about all the things that she has been through, in her 34-year-long career. Madonna talked about the issues a woman goes through and the expectation that she has to live up to and how everything you do would be questioned just because you belong to a certain gender in the society, and things are even worse for female entertainers.

‘Like A Virgin’ singer started her speech with a joke, “I stand before you as a doormat… Oh, I mean, as a female entertainer”, but soon shifted to much more serious concerns that our society should start acknowledging. One of the most influential parts of her speech was definitely her take on how people call her controversial, to which she replied that the most controversial thing she has ever done, is to stay.
