One of the biggest TV shows of 2017 was 13 Reasons Why, which was also one of the most tweeted about shows last year. Everyone binge-watched it within the first 15 days and soon everything anyone could talk about was somehow related to 13 Reasons Why. The show gained mass popularity, all over the world, and people could not stop raving about how amazing the show was and how it tackled some major issues one deals with, in their teenage years.
However, there was also a negative side, an opposition to the popular narrative too. A big majority of people felt that 13 Reasons Why failed at putting the point across and was not able to do the right thing. Many came out to state that the show romanticizes suicide and more than that, it turns an emotional thing into a mystery.
Still, the show was bound to get a season 2, adhering to the mass popularity. But then the unthinkable happened, 13 Reasons Why season 2 failed at creating its charm and was not that big of a success among the viewers. Many still haven’t seen it and others didn’t like it much to go back to it. Even the critics called the show to be doomed, all thanks to its slow narrative and way too many things to think about. Yet by the end of it, we all knew that there will be a season 3, considering all the loose ends makers were able to bring in the last episode.
The last episode had Clay, who was holding the gun a classmate had intended to use to shoot up the school dance, will have to decide what to do—and fast, as the police sirens were already nearing when the season finale came to a close. Bryce, the jock who raped both Hannah and Jessica in Season 1, will still return in Season 3, even after this year’s court battle—albeit at a different school. Then there’s Jessica who would have to choose between Justin and Alex. But then Alex has started developing feelings for his classmate Zach. With all of these dangling threads, the makers have a lot to work on, in season 3 and just yesterday, Netflix made an official announcement about it. They released a bite-sized video which showed a locker room and 3 written on it.
Now, let’s get back to how season 2 was not watched by that many people as season 1 was, but then no one can be sure about the actual numbers. After all, Netflix does not believe in the viewership count and refuse to even get it out to the public.
As someone once said, ‘no publicity is bad publicity’ and maybe Netflix is sticking with that side of the court.
