Netflix Offering Free Subscription For 2 Days In India!

There are good headlines. There are amazing headlines. And then there are those headlines that quite simply make our day. This one- believe it or not- is the latter or should one say, in the third category.

The world’s favourite current modus operandi of consuming entertainment or flicks shall we say aka Netflix is offering such a dazzling scheme in India that many may not believe it.

But then, there’s also this bit of catch that may not exactly make one’s day that rosy after all.

So what is it?

Hey, hold your horses. Before we get into the tiny bit of let down (with all due respect), the big piece of news is that Netflix is offering free subscription- you read it right- in India.

So that’s great right; all sorted and life is divine already- isn’t it?

So what’s the let down?

Well, there’s none. There’s just a catch, albeit a tiny one at that. Netflix, that is offering free subscription in India, is offering so for no more than 2 days- yes, that is all- post which the great scheme shall cease to exist.

Nonetheless, it must be asked as to just who all or how many thought that Netflix would make its streaming services free of cost ever?

Gone are the days of the VCR, following which came the VCD and the DVD era, post which came the decade of the pirated movies (and other forms of entertainment), following which we got ruled by a thing known as ripped version of the movies. And then finally, we are in an era heavily underlined by video streaming services.

Probably only fair to say that one simply doesn’t remember when (or what) was the last time that one bought a VCD or a DVD. In fact, when did you, as a matter of fact, last purchase a DVD player?

Aren’t we all hanging out on Netflix?

Meanwhile, the above told, the following is what Netflix’s COO Greg Peters had to say in regards with the current offer:

“An idea we’re excited about — and we’ll see how it goes, we think that giving everyone in a country access to Netflix for free for a weekend could be a great way to expose a bunch of new people to the amazing stories that we have. Really creating an event, and hopefully, get a bunch of those folks to sign up!”

Additionally, India Today, one of the most widely read publications also elaborated on the current development that deserves to be called sensational – regardless of how short lived an offer that may seem- for a lack of a better word:

Users who register for streamfest will be able to browse the content on Netflix will be able to stream the app on their smart TV, gaming console, iOS, and Android apps and on the PC. However, the streaming quality would be Standard Definition (SD).

To conclude, what do you think about this latest stint by the much-loved Netflix? Is this a fine piece of idea or just one of those flash in the pan efforts that several brands make in order to occupy a place in the consumer mindspace?
