Urmila Matondkar was one of the biggest actresses of the 90s in Bollywood. She had some extraordinary movies and dance numbers to her name and never failed to entertain the audience with her acting and dancing skills. Sadly, much like other 90s actresses, she slowly and steadily left Bollywood with few projects here and there. In fact, Urmila’s last Bollywood project was a remake of 80’s Karz, titled Karzzzz in 2008, she worked opposite Himesh Reshammiya in it.
However, after nine whole years, the Chamma Chamma girl is back and she defies all perceptions of a yesteryears actress in this new song from Irrfan Khan’s Blackmail – Bewafa Beauty.
Urmila performs Bewafa Beauty in a dingy bar (something very synonymous to the 90s and 00s songs) and almost narrates the story of the movie through her lyrics. Keeping the item number aspect of the song aside, Urmila Matondkar indeed defies her age in this number. It almost doesn’t seem like she ever went away from Bollywood and its dance numbers circuit.
Even though Bewafa Beauty narrates the story in the form of an item number, the makers have absolutely denied it and said that the song is more like performance number that takes the story ahead. Abhinay Deol, the director of Blackmail, told India Today, “I did not want an item number appearing in the film out of nowhere. We knew that the song should be able to say something in the story. This is what Bewafa Beauty is about. With its name, the song focuses on an unfaithful beauty. That also forms the film’s premise. It is about a man whose wife is unfaithful to him. Then, through the song, as I gave the brief to Amitabh and Amit, I wanted to revive the memory of fantastic songs of this kind from the past. And that’s why we cast Urmila.” He added, “Urmila is a massive star. She is not an item girl. We wanted a performer, someone who had a tremendous star value but hadn’t been seen on the silver screen for a while now. She fit the bill perfectly.”
Bewafa Beauty has been voiced by Pawni Pandey and the music has been composed by Amit Trivedi. The lyrics of the song have been penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya.
Directed by Abhinay Deo, Blackmail is slated to release on April 6th, 2018.
