There’s a massive reason behind the long going of romantic movies and their success and that is the happy endings. Movies have taught all of us that beyond everything else, all the hardships, problems, complications and whatnot, there’s a happy ending that awaits all of us. Almost every romantic movie ends with two main characters holding hands and watching the sunset.

Movies, particularly romantic movies have ingrained the thought of happy endings in our mind, however, the reality is a lot different than that shown in the movies. At times, there are no happy endings, just endings which often comes with sadness implanted in it. And, there are certain movies that have shown these particular sad endings, and they’re heartbreaking, to say the least.

These movies come with such an agonizing ending that all you’re left with are tons of tears in your eyes and no idea of what to do next with your life than simply crying till the pain goes away.

10. La La Land

The last 20 minutes of La La Land is worth every millisecond of your concentration. This musical will reach straight to your heart, as the lead characters who helped each other in growing, didn’t end up together.

9. Moulin Rouge

Another musical with Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor, where both the leads try their best to be with each other, however, in the end, Nicole dies and everyone cries for their life.

8. Blue Valentine

This slice of life with Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams is a movie that would make you gush with cuteness in the entire first half and then makes you cry for the entire second half. Blue Valentine is just a movie that walks in the extremities of emotions.

7. A Walk To Remember

This high school romance movie with Mandy Moore and Shane West is movie absolutely perfect for every teenager out there. It touches the innocence of teen love and lost, rather greatly, where the female lead has leukemia and loses her life, just as she finds love.

6. Me Before You

This Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin is rather a recent addition to this list of romantic movies with sad endings, however, powerful to say the least. The film is about a quadriplegic aristocrat who falls in love with his caretaker, however, in the end, the guy chooses the path of euthanasia while his lady love stands by him.

5. Brokeback Mountain

Unlike other movies with sad endings on this list, Brokeback Mountain is based on the tragic love that happens between two men, in a time and place when being caught can mean more than just social rejection. While one might hope for a happy ending in this one, there’s none, except for a really sad and heartbreaking goodbye.

4. Casablanca

The iconic classic that gave the world, “we’ll always have Paris”, has been an inspiration for various romantic movies since its release. It’s a tale of two former lovers who found their way back to each other, heartbreak and despair.

3. The Notebook

This movie with sad endings, based on Nicholas Sparks bestseller, can make anyone cry a river. The movie traces the ups and downs of a relationship between two people from opposite ends of the social spectrum. Their love story is one for the ages and there are so many memorable moments from the movie that can never grow old for anyone.

A Fault In Our Stars is a movie with tragedy written all over it. Based on the concepts of first love and how it stays with us for forever, can make even a robot cry. It’s a fresh, lively love story, brimming with humor and heartbreak, and lifted to the heights by Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort.

Call it what you want but Titanic can easily be considered a strong competition for Romeo and Juliet. There’s no other couple that can top the love of Jack and Rose from Titanic, unfortunately, their love story doomed even before it could set sail. However, it’s a romance that everyone should see, at least 10 times in their life.
