Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation(IRCTC) is to offer a travel accident cover of Rs. 10 lakh at a premium of one rupee from next month for Railway passengers.
You can book tickets through the IRCTC website and avail the cover at a premium of one rupee. The Chairman-cum-Managing Director of IRCTC, A K Manocha stated that the insurance cover is besides the compensation given by the Railways in case of accidents to valid ticket holders. This Re 1 insurance will provide coverage against injury, disabilities and death caused due to accidents.
Currently, the insurance offer is under integration process and we can expect it to be operational from coming September.
About 5 Lakh passengers book online ticket daily through IRCTC. This will be the first time when Railway passengers will have the option to buy insurance along with their e-ticket.
The purchase of the insurance cover will not be mandatory but those who avail it will be covered in case of any hospitalisation due to train accidents. This move is offered by IRCTC to woo railway passengers.
