2018, like most other years, as among the best years for the automobile industry.
Sounds strange, or empty? It may have. This rather randomly structured statement bears a context or two when you understand that the famous luxury car marquees did an outstanding job (as per normal) in introducing new luxury sedans and other wagons whilst leaders in the urban mobility space- like Tesla- endured challenges and conquered them with familiar panache.
At the same time, especially when much of the world is still gearing up to rather valuable debates such as climate change and sustainability, 2018 also presented some rather remarkable examples in the sphere safety in the automobile industry.
There were multiple automobile players that catered to cars that were unquestionably labelled as the safest cars for 2018 owing to their upholding of one primary concern: car safety.
Amid times mired by an intrinsically priceless debate- car safety vs vain luxury; which way is the momentum shifting anyways, with choices available between luxury and safety- nothing sounds more interesting than visiting the list of safest cars in 2018.
But while the list, as issued by the revered Insurance Institute for Highway Safety contains many car-makers, an exhaustive listing split into different categories- Large Luxury Cars, Midsize SUVs, Midsize Luxury SUVs, Midsize cars, and Small cars- here’s taking a look at the safest cars of 2018.
But interestingly, before we dive into a quick mention of some wonderful wagons hereunder, it’s worthwhile to mention that the Arlington-based organisation picked as 15 vehicles that qualified for their Top Safety Pick+ Award, 47 vehicles for the Top Safety Pick Award, with distinct winners recognised from the Crossover and Sedan, and other categories.
That said, here’s a list of the safest cars of 2018 from various categories:
They say that among the cars that require the least or even negligible maintenance are the Korean carmakers. On top of it, when you have an Elantra, a car, that has, over the years, undergone a beautiful and appealing exterior redesign, then you know that things are only going to get more beautiful. The Elantra currently shining on the yin-and-yang of a bold-new look and pertinent aspects such as fuel economy.
But that the Elantra has been picked among the safest cars of 2018 also underlines, in principal, its focus on safety, as presented by features such as the – Blind Spot Collision Warning, Rear-Cross-Traffic Collision Warning, and, Safe-Exit Assist.
Also known as the K-3 in South Korea, among the most popular cars in the compact-sedan segment, the Kia Forte, which is an award-winning car was named among the safest cars of 2018. The car that first came into production in 2008, has now, in a decade peaked to being a highly popular car across the Asian markets with a growing popularity in the US as well.
A part of a famous world-class design and engineering brand, Kia, the Optima, an award-winning sleekly designed mid-size sedan was among the vehicles recognised for its safety package in the recently-relased list by the IIHS. Chosen as among the safest cars of 2018, it was a fantastic year-ending high for the South-Korean carmaker.
The Genesis G-70, a beautiful four-door compact executive-sedan manufactured by Korean car-maker Genesis- a renowned player in the luxury sedan market- also found itself amid a prestigious list, that of being among the safest cars in 2018.
Birthed to the public at a Global Launch Event in 2017, at Seoul’s Olympic Park, the Genesis G-70 is traditionally, the carmaker’s third-model and one that was created to compete with other renowned luxury players such as Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and the Infinity Q50.
An eminent player of the major Japanese transportation conglomerate, Subaro, a famous car belonging to the peculiar niche of using boxer engine layout (for vehicles above 1500 cc), the Crosstrek, defined by a high-strength Steel Body structure was a major name in the IIHS-picked awards.
The above told, what was rather interesting to note about the cars that made it to the safest cars of 2018 were award-winning sedans from Europe and North America such as Audi A-4, BMW 3-Series, Alfa Romeo Guilia among others.
Reporting on the exciting list in great detail were noted portals such as Carscoops.com, that shared the following (as an extract)
On the crossover side, the IIHS gave honors to the Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Mazda CX-5, and Mitsubishi Outlander. Other notable models included the Honda Pilot, Lexus RX, Subaru Forester, Toyota RAV4, and Volvo XC60.
