BMW 8 Series Coupe has been confirmed by Harald Krüger, the company’s chairman of the board, and while the whole concept will be unveiled on 26th may, BMW 8 Series Coupe is slated for a launch in 2018.
If you ever thought that a BMW 6 Series Coupe was too small and a bit too straight for your taste then this is literally the best day of your life because after all those rumors about a new flagship from the German automobile manufacturer doing the rounds on the internet, there has been a confirmation of a 2018 launch and it will be a car that might change the face of the company. Moreover, it’s going to be a revival that most of us were waiting for.
For all those who are scratching their head after reading the name BMW 8 Series Coupe and the word revival, you are so used to seeing big luxury sedans that the beast named 8 Series now remains confined to the history books. It was 1989 when one of the coolest ever luxury GT was launched. It had a low stance, pop-up headlamps Knight Rider-type grill and a road presence worth killing for. This is the 1989 E31 8 Series Coupe.
And no, 8 series doesn’t include i8, so need to stop your horses right there.
Now that BMW 8 Series Coupe is ready for a comeback in 2018, we expect the company to up its ante a little and after seeing the spy shots, BMW might have done the same. These spy shots reveal that BMW 8 Series Coupe will feature a low stance, wide and muscular shoulders coupled with a 2+2 seating. It is going to be a two door sedan and when it comes to under the hood power, we at least expect BMW 8 Series Coupe to come with one of those rev-hungry V8s or V12s.
The recently launched 7 Series, on the other hand, features a 6.6-litre twin turbo V12 (609PS and 800Nm) and a 4.4-litre bi-turbo V8 (449PS and 650Nm) under the hood and since there hasn’t been a rumor about a new engine, BMW 8 Series Coupe could feature these engines with a few tweaks.
Harald Krüger while talking about this new launch said, “The BMW 8 Series Coupe will build on our tradition of luxurious sports coupes and add a genuine dream car to our lineup – a slice of pure automotive fascination. The 8 Series Coupe will underpin our claim to leadership in the luxury segment. I can tell you today that this will be a true luxury sports coupe”.
To make way for the BMW 8 Series Coupe, the almost dead 6-Series is expected to be given a shakeup. Rumors have it that a sleeker 6-Series Gran Turismo might replace the 5-Series GT and a proper 6-Series coupe is also expected but with a much sportier stance to compete with the likes of Mercedes-AMG GT, Jaguar F-Type and the Porsche 911 which recently sold its 1 millionth unit.
As for BMW 8 Series Coupe’s competition Mercedes-Benz S-Class coupe, Lexus LC 500 and Maserati GranTurismo which is definitely going to be an eye-pleasing head-to-head.
Although the E31 8 Series Coupe was the only 8 Series model, it faced tough competition from the growing demand for SUVs with price-tags of coupes. However, the moment this revived BMW 8 Series Coupe will be launched, it os definitely going to attract a lot of buyers due to the current demand of bold looks, power, and speed, all stuffed in a technological powerhouse.
